Order of the Amethyst
Houses of the High Council
The Higher Houses
Current Council Representative: Richard Bamford
A large, well-established family with a strong relationship to the Royal family. This House has a reputation for being somewhat eccentric; both male and female heirs are often individual and outspoken, and while they respect tradition and etiquette their own family traditions are a little more unique than others.
They are also one of the only houses where the hereditary titles is inherited by the oldest heir, regardless of gender.
The fourth son of the current leading Lord is Eric Bamford III, who represented the family on the Council on one occasion.
Current Council Representative: Queen Zinnanda Bardac
The ruling family of Bardac’s Holdfast, having held this position since the Kingdom’s founding.
The Bardac family are known to be somewhat liberal for a Royal family, but also patient and dutiful in their services. As a family, they are taught from a young age the responsibilities of leading a nation and take very seriously their duty to protect the Kingdom and its people, with a willingness to sacrifice that sometimes places them at odds with those more profit-driven persons.
The previous King Bernhard and Queen Leana were murdered by agents of the Order of the Amethyst, and the similar assassination attempt on their oldest son Fearghas left him too weak to rule. As such, the current Queen Zinnanda took the Throne and is the only other remaining member of the direct family line; her uncle Richard Bardac having disappeared some years ago.
Current Council Representative: Shia-nah
A strange family thought to have originated across the sea in the continent to the East, with foreign features and traditions prominent. A disciplined and quiet-spoken family with a long history of military training and philosophy.
Along with the Hodson House, they are known for successfully holding the country’s southern borders against bandits from the desert and invasion from the Empire, and therefore their military knowledge and skill is widely respected.
Current Council Representative: Unknown
The Greythorne family has a reputation for being arrogant and argumentative, often sticking their noses into others business while firmly guarding their own privacy – but never criminal to public knowledge (although their recent attempts to overthrow the ruling family Bardac have somewhat sullied their reputation). Lady Eliza Greythorne and her knight, Sir Brutus Rex, were arrested following the failed attempt.
Those who have never dealt with them personally often think that a blessing given their reputation. Cold and ruthless in business deals, they wouldn’t hesitate to seek to take advantage of any weakness in their enemies, especially political enemies.
A popular and successful family who, along with the Bardac House, supply much of the country’s timber and woodcrafting skills. A loyal family to the Throne, many of the older portion of the family were similarly wiped-out in the attack on the Bardac Country Estate, leaving the younger twin brothers to take up leadership of the House.
Current Council Representative: Lord Tobias Kerrsgold
A friendly and open-minded house known for holding lands which include the Sky Vault Realms; the mountain range where many metallic dragons withdrew following The Severance, as well as the kingdom’s largest sea-port city of Winterbreak.
Current Council Representative: Governor Kavdek Mittark
A family whose founding and involvement in kingdom politics has always been marred with suspicion. Their main stronghold is Mallowmarsh which, though not technically a city in its own right, sees a higher level of trade and travelling than one would expect. Indeed, the settlement has a wide-spread reputation for established black-market trade, however this has never been proven.
The current leader of the House came to power in strange circumstances; the whole upper tier of the family took a sudden and unexpected trip by ship to visit relatives in Southcliffe, but never completed their course and the ship’s wreckage was found washed up near Shore’s Tooth and all the family declared lost at sea. Kavdek Mittark, although having himself been missing for a number of years immediately prior to the accident, was at that time a distant cousin but the closest remaining relative and he therefore inherited the House and holdings without contest.
Current Council Representative: Unknown
A well respected and powerful House, they were recently marred by the discovery that Lord Cameron Turnock had been working for the Order of the Amethyst and both he and his oldest son Sir Sebastian Turnock were arrested by the crown.
The Lesser Houses
Current Council Representative: Sir Brennan Acheson
A House that holds lands beside the Vogr Bordir mountain range, known for maintaining strong relations with the mountain dwarves.
Current Council Representative: Farryn Alethra
A very recent addition to the Lesser Houses of the Council, they have taken inheritance of the Isle of Halherig following a period of non-ownership after the fall of the Inara family.
Current Council Representative: Sir Greysen Baird
A house that specialises in farming and produce, but other than trade generally keeps to itself.
Current Council Representative: Sir Dylan Cainforth
An influential family that is known for hosting various festivals and contests. Sir Dylan is a popular man often seen at court and generally jovial and likeable.
Current Council Representative: Sir Joeran Eastham
A fairly new House, with limited political allies. Its lands hold the South Ways Road, the main trade route between the Bardac holdings and the Cliffe.
Current Council Representative: High Councillor Noramdir Jademace
The Glorfell family is a House of dwarves who travelled down from Vogr Bordir mountains to ally themselves with Bardac’s Holdfast and were rewarded with lands as a thanks. They have a reputation for being loyal and stead-fast but slow to act, often preferring to think at length about making a decision before committing to it. They maintain strong family and trade links with the mountain dwarves and are strong allies with the Dulton House.
Current Council Representative: Lord Caleb Hardshaw
Easily amongst the most militaristic houses, Hardshaw has held soldiers along the Northern borders with the Splintered Lands since the Kingdom’s founding. The House takes its responsibility in defending the country very seriously and as such, members of the House often receive a high level of training and education making them great military leaders and tacticians.
The Longshaw family is an offshoot from the Hardshaw family, and share many traits and traditions.
Current Council Representative: Sir Marcus Hodson
Along with the Dulton House, Hodson are known for successfully holding the country’s southern borders against bandits from the desert and invasion from the Empire, and therefore their military knowledge and skill is widely respected.
Current Council Representative: Captain Caedmon Jameson
A House founded amongst sea-farers and traders and not traditional ‘nobles’, they are known for an odd philosophy of equality and general disregard for noble hierarchy and inherited entitlement. The House is not a family but a council of appointed traders who represent the various artisans and crafters in the region, although they suffered a great loss in the recent razing of their city Bishop’s Point by a red dragon.
Current Council Representative: Lord Ayden Keane
Initially formed of a single house with Kelley, Keane are traders and profiteers by nature; highly motivated by profit but with a reputation for poorly constructed goods and sub-standard services. They are fiercely competitive against Kelley due to a long-standing family feud although they share the land-side portion of the region’s main city ‘The Cliffe’, which is also known separately as Northcliffe.
Current Council Representative: Lord Harrison Kelly
Initially formed of a single house with Keane, the Kelley House are traders and profiteers who specialise in sea-trade and ships. Highly motivated by profit they have a similar reputation for endeavouring to trade above the value of an item in order to gain the best profit at anyone else’s expense. They are fiercely competitive against Kelley due to a long-standing family feud, and they share the sea-side portion of the region’s main city ‘The Cliffe’, which is also known separately as Southcliffe.
Current Council Representative: Sir Jonah Longshaw
The Longshaw family is an offshoot from the Hardshaw family, and like their founding House are known for being highly educated and trained, but through lack of the necessity to defend a border are more skilled in sciences and technology than their cousins.
There is a friendly competitive rivalry between the two families but they are ultimately loyal allies, often sharing resources and profits.
Current Council Representative: Unknown
The Nixon family were a small but loyal family to the Bardac Royal House, their oldest son being betrothed to Zinnanda. Sadly their whole family was killed in the attack on Bardac Country Estate and as such, their lands are currently under the care of a warder appointed by the crown until the next inheritor can be found or the lands delegates appropriately.
Current Council Representative: Lady Silstra Ranger
A house known for breeding the best horses and dogs, and for dutifully helping to guard the country’s northernmost borders. They also have fairly strong trade alliances with the city of Castellia, a maintain a small but profitable trade on importing magical goods from the Three Cities.
Current Council Representative: Miss Nissilla Stephens
This House holds a small mid-nation duchy that holds the kingdom’s smallest timberwood. The region benefits from holding the main trade route between Goldshore and Mallowmarsh and much of its profit and success is reliant upon maintaining amicable relations. As such, they often present as amiable and friendly but are often found to have their own agenda in mind.
Current Council Representative: Master Pinnick Swarthmore
A family of halflings, the Swarthmores are known to be conscientious pacifists and objectors to any form of violence. As such, there are a number of other Houses that have fractious relations with this House.
Current Council Representative: Lord James Thorpe
A prosperous lesser family, they specialise in the growing of teas popular both in the Kingdom and the Empire. They are the only southern border-duchy not known for its military force, although there are currently-unfounded rumours that they maintain their borders through less lawful manners.
Members of the High Council
Each of these houses holds a seat on the High Council of Bardac’s Holdfast and may vote as part of the High Council, in keeping with the voting method being used.
Each Higher House has one member representative and may also have one additional person in attendance (the additional person may not directly take part in the debate and does not vote).
Each Lesser House has one member representative but is not allowed any additional persons in attendance.
Each of these houses (including the house of the Royal Family) is also responsible for the management of a Duchy within the kingdom; these Duchies are often simply known by the name of their noble family (e.g. The Bardac Duchy) although some have historically significant names.
